# 309Rupee 1181 RY 15 PeshwasIndia C Indep. Kingdoms - Maratha Confederacy
India – Maratha Confederacy – Athani– Peshwas, Anonymous Ruler (ca AD 1757 - 1765). Issue in the name of the Mughal Emperor Alamgir II. Rupee AH 1181 // 1181 (frozen). Mint: Athni (Dar-ul-Khilafat Shahjahnabad), Silver (ø 22 mm – w. 11.12 g.). Edge: plain. KM 70. M/W T1a var., p. 44.

Obverse:
Persian legend. Couplet with the Ruler's name and titles (from bottom to top: [Taban] Mihr wa Mah Mubarak / Sikkah [A]ziz al-Din / [Al]amgir [Ghazi Ba[d]sh[ah] = Shining (like) the sun and the moon (is the) auspicious coin (of) Aziz ud-Din Alamgir, Warrior against the infidels, Emperor). Date (1181) in the central line at left. Mint marks in field.

Reverse:
Persian legend. Mint name with epithet, Julus formula and date (from bottom to top: [1181] sanat julus maimanat manus / [zar]b Dar-ul-Khi]lafat Shahjahna[bad] / A[thn]i = Struck at the Seat of the Caliphate, Shahjahanabad Athni, (in the) year 1181 (of his) reign associated with prosperity). Mint marks in field.

Note:
These coins bear the pseudo mint name Dar-ul-Khilafat Shahjahnabad and the actual mint name Athni on reverse. The fixed year AH 1181, present on both the sides of the coins, should be a mistake for AH 1171 (AD 1757/8), the year when these coins were first struck, during the reign of Alamgir II. An apparently unlisted mint mark (for this type of coin) is visible in the N of DIN on obverse, similar to M/W n. 305, Ganjikot: T1, p. 236.
